Title: Quantity Surveyor
Reporting To: Associate/Director/Partner
Location: Edinburgh

Thomas & Adamson require a commercially focussed Quantity Surveyor, with long-term career development aspirations. Being self-motivated, ambitious, and client focused with the ability to work independently is vital to this role, as well as possessing a creative and consistent approach to delivering excellence.

ROLE OVERVIEW
You will be APC qualified or due to sit your APC within the next year, with a commitment to delivering a high quality service, a creative and consistent approach to delivering excellence. This would be both pre and post contract, therefore covering all aspects of surveying. Responsibilities will include initially assisting on projects but with a view to taking ownership for cost management, procurement and post contract roles. This will require you to work as part of a team, with clear and consistent communications, there will be an element of planning and managing your work load

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Quantity Surveyor (QS) will be responsible for the following:

Providing Excellent Technical Services
Delivering technical services under consultancy agreements executed between Thomas & Adamson and their client. The role specifically includes:

Cost Planning
• Preparing appropriate Cost Estimates at each stage of the design development process
• Attending design team meetings
• Identifying Project risks
• Identifying possible Value Engineering

Tendering/ Procurement
• Preparation of appropriate tender documentation, this may be traditional including preparation of bills of quantities or the employers requirements for a design and build contract. On more complex projects this may be initially an assisting role but with a view to taking full ownership when appropriate
• Review returned tenders and preparation of tender reports
• Negotiations with contractors on behalf of clients to ensure construction values represent best value, when instructed to do so
• Preparation of contract documentation

Post Contract
• Processing of monthly valuations
• Preparation of monthly financial statements, including collating and assessing contract and possible instructions
• Monitoring project cash flows
• Ensuring project files are well maintained and the document controller is fully conversant with agreed communication protocols
• Providing other QS support as required by the business and/or required by project appointments

General Duties
• Generally representing Thomas & Adamson in a professionally competent and positive manner, ensuring service quality and integrity is maintained to the highest possible standards
• Reporting to the client and other stakeholders in line with the client’s requirement with company standards

Delivering Great Client Experience
The successful candidate will be responsible for representing T&A in a manner that reflects the company’s values; providing a personal, quality focussed service that reflects the client’s business objectives.
The QS will build strong, professional relationships with clients, consultants and contractors.

In this context, the role will involve:
• Representing T&A at project meetings with clients, designers and contractors to provide advice on all aspects of project assignments and following up on actions assigned to Thomas and Adamson at all such meetings
• Communicating clearly, concisely and coherently with the client and other consultants regarding information required for the purpose of performing our services
• Identifying risks and issues with ongoing activities and positively identifying mitigation measures in a way that both protects the interests of the client, Thomas & Adamson and any other relevant stakeholders

Skills/Knowledge
Suitable candidates will be:
• Educated to degree level (or equivalent) or able to demonstrate experience in a relevant discipline.
• Able to demonstrate awareness of current legislation relating to Health & Safety
• Expected to demonstrate early capabilities in Contract Administration and Employer’s Agent skills across a range of projects and successful delivery of them
• Able to demonstrate your involvement with several clients and that you have been able to establish good working relationships with them
